When Life Feels Murky

There are times in life when we all find ourselves feeling submerged.

Overwhelmed by responsibilities. Lost in uncertainty. Carrying worries that seem heavier than they should. We keep going because we have to, yet somewhere beneath the busyness we long for clarity, peace and the feeling that we have somehow found our way back to ourselves.

I've experienced many of those moments throughout my life.

And perhaps that is one of the reasons I find myself returning again and again to nature for answers.

Not because it removes life's challenges, but because it gently reminds me of truths I already know but sometimes forget.

One of nature's most powerful teachers, for me, has always been the waterlily.

Lessons from Beneath the Surface

There are certain subjects I return to again and again in my paintings.

Wildflower meadows.

Gardens filled with movement and light.

The quiet beauty of nature.

And, perhaps most of all, waterlilies.

Whenever I come across a pond filled with waterlilies, I find myself slowing down. I pause to watch the reflections moving across the water, the gentle rise and fall of the lily pads and the flowers floating so effortlessly on the surface.

They seem peaceful.

Graceful.

Almost serene.

Yet what we see above the water tells only part of the story.

Beneath the surface lies darkness, depth and unseen growth. The waterlily begins its journey in the murky depths of the pond before slowly making its way towards the light. It emerges from conditions that appear unlikely, rising through the water to produce flowers of extraordinary beauty.

Perhaps that is why I have always felt such an affinity with them.

Finding Our Way Back to the Light

Over the years I have experienced many periods when life felt challenging, uncertain or overwhelming. Times when I felt submerged beneath responsibilities, worries or circumstances that seemed impossible to navigate.

Yet, like the waterlily, I have always found my way back to the surface.

Not unchanged.

But stronger.

Clearer.

With a deeper understanding of myself and what truly matters.

One of the greatest lessons life has taught me is that growth rarely happens when everything is easy. It often arrives through the very experiences we would rather avoid. The difficult periods. The uncertainty. The moments when we question ourselves, lose confidence or feel overwhelmed by the demands of life.

When I look back, many of the most important insights I have gained have emerged from those times. Not immediately. Often only after I have slowed down enough to listen. Nature has always helped me do that. A walk through a garden, time spent beside water, watching light move through leaves or grasses; these moments have a way of gently untangling thoughts that once felt overwhelming.

Again and again I have discovered that clarity is often waiting quietly beneath the noise. That what feels like an ending is sometimes the beginning of a new understanding. That we are capable of far more resilience than we realise.

What Waterlilies Continue to Teach Me

The older I become, the more I realise that resilience is not about becoming hard.

It is not about pushing through endlessly or pretending everything is fine.

For me, resilience is something quieter.

It is the willingness to keep growing through difficult times.

To remain open-hearted.

To keep searching for beauty.

To trust that clarity will return even when life feels uncertain.

Waterlilies remind me of this every time I see them.

They remind me that growth is often happening long before we can see evidence of it.

That periods of stillness have value.

That difficult seasons do not last forever.

And that we are capable of emerging into the light again and again throughout our lives.

These reflections became the inspiration for my Waterlily Collection.

The Waterlily Collection

The paintings are not illustrations of symbolism. Rather, they are personal reflections on resilience, renewal, hope and the quiet strength found in nature.

Each painting explores a different aspect of that journey.

Insights reflects those moments of clarity that arrive when we create space to listen to ourselves.

Revival speaks of renewal and fresh beginnings.

Unity explores connection and belonging.

Fortitude reflects inner strength and perseverance.

Perspicacity celebrates wisdom, understanding and the ability to see beyond the surface of things.

Trusting the Process

Together they form a collection inspired by the lessons waterlilies continue to teach me.

That beauty can emerge from difficulty.

That growth often happens unseen.

And that no matter how deep the water may seem, there is always a path back towards the light.

Perhaps that is why I continue to return to waterlilies. They remind me that we do not have to force growth. Sometimes we simply need to trust the process, keep moving towards the light and allow ourselves the grace to unfold in our own time.

Not simply because they are beautiful.

But because they remind me what it means to be human.
