About this painting: I’m not quite sure why my mind works the way it does, but the stories behind my paintings just flow into my mind as I paint.
Last summer, I went for a wander at Wildside. There is a little bit apple orchard there, in amongst the flower beds & the grass is allowed to grow high, beneath the trees, creating a secret little meadow. Sitting, for a while I just looked at the hazy grass with the sun coming though it
Grass. The simplest, most common, basic thing you can think of.
Getting a bit lost in the moment, as I do, I started seeing how diverse the tiny meadow was. How many different types of grass, at various stages of development made up this little patch of fading green. Together, they made such a beautiful wispy mix, the light creating a magical little world. Each individual grass having its own form, some fluffy, some sharp blades, others going to seed. Every one of them had its own charm, but mingling happily together, they created something wonderful.
‘Diversity’, made me think, as I painted, of our own society. Our meadow, made up of so many different types of people. Different races, religions, colours. Tall, short, fat, thin, fit, disabled, old & young. Noticing each individuals traits have their own charm. Looking closely you can find something amazing about each one. Together, we also could make a beautiful meadow. If only we could learn to sway with the wind, to bend & be flexible. To notice the allure of each single one. Our meadow is called humanity. If we’re all a little more tolerant, not just of race, sexuality or disabiity, but of more everyday things which people can point out or critique. The way someone looks. If we could stop judging .. too thin, too fat, not my idea of pretty, too slow, speaks differently, looking for flaws, thinking it’s ok to criticise.
How about we all look at ourselves, see that we are all imperfect & perfect at the same time. Loveable, beautiful, deserving to be respected & cared for.
If we could just see the wonder of all that diversity, wouldn’t our meadow be the most wonderful place to be?
Diversity is a calm & relaxing painting, perfect for bringing a fresh sense of Nauture & the outdoors into your home
