About this painting:  Autumnal ornamental grasses sway in the breeze with dapples of sunlight gilding their tiny seeds with bursts of light. The painting exudes warm tones & a sense of calm which bring a comforting ambience into a room. The grasses move across the canvas as if animated. The golden tones of grass fronds are backed by deep aubergine & magenta tones with purple & blue shades bring a subtle sense of distance.

Durability- ‘The ability to last over time, resisting wear, breakage, deterioration, damage.’
Golden grasses grow in my border, where I can see them as I paint.
I watch them sway in the wind & create dapples of light in the evening sun. Over the year they change from vibrant green fronds, create fluffy plumes & slowly let the breeze capture their seeds & carry them away. So from the first days of Spring, over the Summer & Autumn & right through the Winter they stand strong bringing me joy as they dance.

Their durability across the seasons also give me strength. As I watch them flex & bend, they remind me that to last the course there needs to be flexibility as strength. When the unpredictable weather throws everything at them, they endure by bending & moving with the flow & lasting throughout the year.

The challenges of our own lives require the same sort of adaptability. As the world throws ever more unforeseeable circumstances our way, we need to find ways to adapt & not let them break us.

We need to be conscious to what is happening both in the greater world & in our immediate surroundings but somehow not let them get us down or damage us.

Having compassion & softness needs to be balanced with creating a protective bubble around us so that everything doesn’t overwhelm us. We all have different ways of doing this & we have to keep reminding ourselves to reinforce that shell without it becoming too hard.

On a personal level I can be too empathetic & find myself deeply affected by everything which is thrown at us & the lack of having any control over it. My way of coping is to make as many small differences in life to be kind & sympathetic with those in my sphere. To be aware of the bigger picture but not get immersed in it.

When I feel it all starting to affect me, I stop, breathe & do some silent meditation. Being a bit hairy fairy I often imagine creating a turquoise bubble around myself, like a shell. I ask for help & asking angels with enormous open wings around my home to shield my family from negativity & fan back love into the world. Yup, I know, you may think that a bit out there, but it works for me. We can all find our own ways to build that stregth without losing our softness.

looking at this painting, is a remineder whenever things become too much.
