Title:          'The Essence of Being'

Medium:   Acrylic & Oils on Canvas

Size:            61cm x 91cm (24"x36")

About this painting: A calming painting, filled with light. withtones of lilacs & purple, teals & greens. It creates a focal point of light in a room & generates a mood of calm.

As storm Eunice devastated the countryside, ripping down trees & buildings, painting ‘Essence of Being’, was an oasis of calm by my French windows as Nature unleashed its power outside.

The painting was inspired a cold Winter morning in January, when I went to the garden house, out on dartmoor to drop off some paintings. It wasn’t open to the public that day but I got to have a mooch around in complete peace & silence. It was that week when Spring had not yet touched the soil but to me, there was still magic everywhere.

The mizzling Devon rain had left a glittering of droplets everywhere & for a moment the sun broke through the clouds. A clump of winter heather became a miniature landscape of dapples, diamond scattered as the sun hit the dew. I was mesmerised by the shimmering light & stood transfixed for some time, absorbing its details into my mind. A sense of dreaminess overtook me, an inner quiet of complete stillness.

This is the power of Nature, both the exhilarating drama of todays storm &, in contrast, the moments of utter awe in the tiny little things. It makes me feel that the way you see things creates who you are. Finding the wonder in the small things changes the mundane to the wonderful. The glimpses of enchanting light, spellbinding intakes of breath as you see the lovely gifts of Nature. These are the things which lift life from the ordinary to the incredible.

Just being open to noticing the tiniest gem rather than walking on by.
