About this Painting: Just before the sun sets, there is that magical half an hour of golden light. The sun hangs low & guilds the world with dappled gold.

My work is all about the stories & symbology in nature, the meanings behind colours & flowers & creating wellbeing from Nature's colours. So you may think that a meadow in the dead of winter, with dried, dead grasses & seedheads may be the last thing I would paint

However, the other day I just managed to be walking the dog, in the brief half hour of freedom we are allowed in the current full scale lockdown, as the sun hovered above the horizon , sending golden rays across the landscape. The barren patch of scrub & grasses at the back of the garden took on a totally new atmosphere. my mind started delving into thoughts & ideas & I knew that the minute I got back, I would have to paint it from memory.

My thoughts centered about life & how the seasons of Nature reflect so clearly our own passage through life. Particularly this winter of 2020/21, whi ch is about as bleak as it gets, the moments of beauty have to be appreciated & cherished. A garde or meadow goes through constant transition. From first being planted it develops, fills out & blooms.

Every year, the seasons create such deep change & in the winter it may appear empty, devoid of life & barren. However, even the darkest season, beneath the ground life is generating, just waiting for Spring to warm the earth. Then, vibrant growth bursts forth, fresh, new, fuller & stronger than the year before. To grow, bloom & flourish. to come to fruit & then again to retreat into the next winter.

This seasonal shift & the meadow of dry grasses lit by sunlight brought to front of mind the awareness of how we too grow in a similar way. We have our dark time, of lack, emptiness & struggle. But this time of hibernation is a time to process & learn, to change the way we think & re-emerge stronger, wiser with new ideas of ways to move forward in life. Each year our bloom is fuller, like the garden growing to maturity we become more beautiful as the years pass.

There is no need to fear the dark times, because it is them which shape us. It is them that make us develop & change & become fulfilled & the best we can be.
